Missions Unpacked
Who is a Christian missionary?
A Christian missionary is someone who leaves their home and goes into another area in order to spread the Gospel.
Where do missionaries come from?
Missionaries can come from any country.
How long do missionaries stay in another area?
There are two types of mission trips: Long term and short term. The International Mission Board considers long term trips to be 3 years or more and 2-3 years more short term. Other organizations consider long term trips to be more than and year and short term trips to be less than a year.
Why do Christians do missions?
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”- Jesus (Matthew 28:16-20)
Jesus' command to the disciples still applies to all Christians today. While some people stay and make disciples and spread the Gospel in their own community, others are called to go make another country their community and spread the Gospel to them. The ultimate goal of all Christians is that everyone should know who Jesus is and what He did for all creation.
What is the Gospel, and why do Christians want people to know about it?
"In 1 Corinthians 15:1–4, Paul provides the most succinct summary of the gospel: the man Jesus is also God, or Christ, and died on a cross in our place, paying the penalty for our sins; three days later He rose to conquer sin and death and give the gift of salvation to all who believe in Him alone for eternal life."- Mars Hill Church
The Gospel must be spread because it's important for people to know that there is a God that loves them, and want for them to have hope that is stronger than any other thing in the World. If people put their faith in Christ, they will have eternal life with Jesus, and that is better than any other thing. In the Bible Paul says, "What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ" (Philippians 3:8).
